Holograms in nursing education: Results of an exploratory study

Objective: The purpose of this exploratory and descriptive study was to evaluate the student experience using Microsoft HoloLens® headsets HoloPatient application (app) perform a nursing assessment Jerry, life-sized hologram young man admitted Emergency Department following mountain bike accident.Methods: Setting: research conducted in 2019 New Zealand School Nursing. Participants were undergraduate (pre-licensure) students (N = 121) enrolled 3-year Bachelor Nursing degree programme. before went on their first hospital-based clinical placement. Methods: researchers designed tutorial that guided through five steps reasoning cycle (i.e., look, collect, process, decide, plan) collect cues information about Jerry’s condition which worsens as he develops anaphylactic shock. Tutorials during week immediately preceding placement assist develop skills.Results: Data collected via post-activity pen paper survey. Quantitative data showed technology enhanced learning. Thematic analysis identified 17 advantages holograms, including realism, reduced level self-consciousness, better preparation for practice. Disadvantages mostly related technical projection issues such blurry image quality.Conclusions: These findings indicate spending time carefully observing, processing provided assisted novice nurses skills, thereby increasing readiness setting.
